Library & Online Resources

HURST LIBRARY
The Library web page provides access to library materials and services including print and electronic books, and curriculum materials. Print journals and full-text online articles are available as well as access to many databases that provide links to holdings in other libraries (like WorldCat) and indexing of articles that can be requested through Interlibrary Loan.

Online Databases that focus on Education including ERIC and Education Research Complete are available. Other general databases such as Academic Search Premier and Research Library Complete also index and provide access to full-text education journals. Databases focusing on psychology such as PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES may be good databases to search depending on your topic. Use the Education Subject link to view page with links to these databases and other resources for educators

In Class Project:
Search the resources in our library to find articles or books regarding technology and education.  Focus on the age of student that you will be working with in the future.

ARTICLES:

Do a search in one of the databases available from Hurst Library
  • If searching for a phrase put quotes around the phrase ("social studies")
  • How can you limit your search to articles focused on the grade level you want to teach?
  • If you are not in an Education database how would you make sure that your search results included articles regarding the education and the classroom?
  • How can you make sure that the article is about technology?
  • How can you make sure that the article is a current one?
  • If you get too many articles, how can you narrow the search?
  • If your paper is due tomorrow how can you limit your search to articles that are available to you tonight?
  • How can you see the most current articles first?
Find one article that is of interest to you and click on the title. Are you still interested in the article after you read the abstract? Notice that a Persistent Link to this article is available. You will use the Persistent Link in Assignment #1.

BOOKS:
  • If searching for a phrase put quotes around the phrase ("social studies").
  • How can you limit the search to books that relate to elementary or secondary students?
  • How would you add "technology" to your search?
  • How would you put a hold on this book so it would be ready for pick up when you visit the library tomorrow?
  • How can you change the list so the most current books are first?
  • How can you see a list of books that you have checked out? How can you renew your books?
